Haki
has released several tracks under the XELA Digital label this
past year, and teamed up with BIT Records head AAV for their Disposable
Music release, set to release later this month. Haki starts the
year off with his solo release Mindshift, a dark little EP loaded
with mechanic ambiances and stimulating synths.
First
off is Beware, a gradual progressive number that touches the essence
of techno with its simple yet effective drum production and gritty
bass. The pulsating bass does well to capture the darker mood,
but little to no melody is ever introduced. An abundance of loopy
ambiances are well incorporated into the track breaking up the
redundancies. Several small builds are cast about but only the
last breakdown of Beware tends to carry any momentum with addition
of new sounds and rolling drums to bring you back to the original
production.
EP
title track Mindshift introduces itself with a simple bassline
that is moderately bubbly and a drum production that doesn’t
seem to vary. A slight octave change to the bassline gives it
some variance but the Mindshift doesn’t seem to grow until
the addition of a grueling bassline and melody are introduced.
The breakdown is spacious, laden with stabs and elongated synths
of the rendered melody. A more intricate drum production evolves
and swells till the drop where everything ties together and creates
a whole new vibe with its uplifting melody and altered bass groove.
I
really enjoyed Mindshift out of the two and this EP has good potential
to be worked in several different ways. In the future I would
really love to see Haki break from his gentle production and push
out something a bit more aggressive.
